CASE STUDY
Finding Feelings App

Project Overview
The Product
This Responsive Web app is for children & teens who want to better recognize their emotions, and the emotions of others.
Project Duration
October 2023 - November 2023
The Problem
Some children and teens with past trauma and neurodivergence have a hard time recognizing their emotions and the emotions of others.
My Role
UX Research
UX Design
Prototyping
The Goal
I hope to give an easy way for children and teens to process emotions and recognize emotions in others.
My Responsibilities
As the sole UX designer on this project, I was responsible for all aspects of the design process.
Summary
Through competitor audits, I found a lack of visually appealing products that teach children and teens about emotions.
I also saw a lack of comprehensive products that allowed the application of learning through user documentation and writing about their emotions.
I felt that if I could combine learning and application in a product that was visually appealing, I could help children and teens become more emotionally mature.
Most competitors did not have a web app. The website, if they had it, direct you to the app store.
With the exception of Duolingo, the graphics were either not sophisticated, or not very child or teen friendly.

User Research

All users had difficulty finding the home page because of the language used on the
navigation bar.
Finding
3
Users were not sure when they had completed all of the tasks.

Information Architecture
I wanted to create a site map that allowed for growth of features within the web app.

I was able to combine both elements of visual representation of emotions and journaling to expand on emotional intelligence.
I also made the design uncluttered with simple recognizable elements to keep the user engaged.

Using the digital mockups, I created a low-fi prototype in Figma.

Mockups After Usability Study
Users wanted to have more than just text and emojis for their daily journals. I added a voice to text option, as well as the ability to upload and take photos.
Users found the language for the home page icon confusing, I simplified the label language.
Users were unsure if they had completed all of the daily tasks. I added a "Congratulations" overlay that communicated competion more clearly.

mockups

Based on the updated lo-fi mockups, I created hi-fi mockups in Figma.

The user flow is linear, but users are able to enter the flow from multiple directions. With a status bar update after task completion, and a clear flow ending, users have a good understand of how to complete the user flow.
responsive screen sizes

Having a similar look, feel and function across devices will help users when using the app in different applications.
3
Designed with Text hierarchy to assist with screen readers.
2
I used a Figma plug-in to test out color visibility, and text size - according to a11y standards.
1
I added a voice to text option in the journaling section to make it more accessible to younger users and users with learning disabilities, as well as users who are vision impaired.
Accessibility Concerns
Impact
“Cool! I like that I just pick an emoji instead of having to figure out what to call what I am feeling” - Ada study participant
What I Learned
Having a guided experience was very helpful in keeping users engaged. Having a clear flow allowed them to finish each task we wanted them to.

3
Continue research for best practices for reaching and being able to educate our target user. We want to be able to connect with our users in the most effective ways.
2
Design the other user flows, included parent or teacher resources. We would like to add these elements as tools for measuring user participation.
1
Create more content for the “skills” and “learn pages. The more content we have, the more our users can learn.
